Chimney #1

The chimney cap on this chimney failed, which allowed water to enter behind and between the bricks over time. With repeated freeze-thaw cycles, the mortar joints and bricks deteriorated. To correct the problem, we removed all of the brickwork down to the roofline, rebuilt the chimney, installed new caps, and caulked the flashing around the base of the chimney. The chimney should now function properly and have a longer service life.

Chimney #2

The weathered sides of this chimney had become a serious problem. Most of the bricks were broken and badly damaged. Another issue was the lack of a drip edge on the underside of the cap, which allowed water to run down the face of the chimney instead of directing it onto the roof. This contributed to the deterioration of the brickwork.

We rebuilt the chimney down to the roofline, replaced the cap, and recaulked all of the base flashing. With the new cap and proper drip-edge protection in place, water should now flow onto the roof instead of down the face of the bricks, reducing the risk of future damage.

Chimney #3

This chimney is an older stone chimney located at a cottage in Muskoka, Ontario. The cap had failed, and there were many cracks that had been left unaddressed for a long period of time. As a result, water was able to penetrate the joints.

We removed all of the mortar joints. Because this is a stone chimney, the joints are typically much larger and deeper than those in brick chimneys, in some places measuring 2 inches or more. For that reason, a different repair method was required. We first applied an initial layer of mortar, referred to as back pointing. After that, we returned to front point and finish the joints using a wooden jointer to create an older, rustic appearance rather than the smoother finish produced by a metal jointer. The mortar was also colored to match the existing mortar as closely as possible.

With the joints replaced and the cap repaired, this chimney should now perform well and its service life should be extended.
